When I was a child, I was introduced to sugar cane through my father from Barbados. On the way home after school, we would drive down Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn and stop at a street vendor to pick up some sweet sugar cane. "I loved loved loved me some sugar cane." My dad would cut it up into cubes and place it in the fridge to get cold while I changed out of school clothes—one of my favorite childhood memories.



So, what is sugar cane? Sugar cane is one of the main crops used to produce sugar. It is a perennial grass that is mainly grown in tropical regions. 70 percent of sugar is made from sugar cane. The remaining fibrous mass from sugar cane can be used for fuel, sound-insulating boards, paper, and other countries' alcohol. Imagine sugar cane in alcohol. Everybody in the club getting tipsy.

In the warmer months, I make sure to always have sugar cane because it helps me cool down in the heat. Unfortunately, one thing I hate is sweating, and at times I sweat a lot. Sugar cane juice aids in reducing dehydration. I don't feel as dry and fatigued in humidity. The sugar cane juice also helps me manage my lupus symptoms. I struggle with fatigue a lot, so the cane juice gives me a kick of energy. I also suffer from bad allergies, and the juice helps to alleviate the symptoms. Overall the taste is everything, and sugar cane will surely make you feel good inside and out.
